Rent a Car in France with a US Licence: Do You Need a Certified Translation?

Renting a car in France with a US licence is usually possible. The paperwork, however, can surprise American travellers.

French rules require that officials can read and verify your licence. So you may need your original licence plus an accepted translation or an International Driving Permit (IDP).

A certified translation is only one of the possible solutions. This guide helps you decide when you really need one.

Can you rent a car in France with a US licence?

Yes. In most cases, a valid US driver’s licence is enough to rent a car in France.

On a short tourist stay, you can drive with your US licence, subject to the usual conditions.

If you become a resident, different rules apply. You may have to exchange your licence for a French one. That depends on your situation and on the US state that issued it.

France Titres (ANTS) runs the online exchange procedure. I explain it further below.

Rental companies also set their own rules:

• Most want you to have held your licence for at least one year.
• You usually need a passport and a credit card in the driver’s name.
• Digital licences shown only on a phone are often refused, so bring the physical card.

What the law and rental agencies require

French rules focus on one question: can officials read and verify your licence?

EU licences (Italian, German, Spanish and others) are recognised in France without a translation. This page covers non-EU licences, such as US licences.

US licences use the Latin alphabet. Even so, you may have to show an official translation or an IDP with your original licence.

Some rental companies write this into their conditions. They may ask for a licence in Roman characters, or one with an official translation or international permit.

The documents requested at the counter vary from one company and one branch to another. Age, the time you have held your licence and the vehicle category can also change the conditions.

International Driving Permit or certified translation?

When a translated version of your US licence is required, you have two main options.

The International Driving Permit

You arrange an IDP in the United States before you travel. It suits travellers who plan ahead.

Once you are abroad, getting one from the United States is often impractical. Always check the conditions for your trip and destination.

The certified French translation

A French sworn translator produces it, and you can order it after you arrive in France.

It is often the most practical fix when a rental company suddenly asks for an official translation.

What about ANTS / France Titres and a US driving licence?

ANTS, now presented as France Titres, matters when you want to exchange a foreign driving licence for a French licence. This is a different procedure from renting a car as a tourist.

According to France Titres, an exchange application needs a translation by a sworn translator registered with a French court. The only exception is a licence written exclusively in French.

Other documents may be required. These include proof of identity, proof of residence and an attestation of driving rights from the foreign authority.

When a certified French translation is the right choice

A certified translation is the better option in several situations:

• You arrived in France without the translated documents your rental company asks for.
• A rental company or branch specifically asks for a French translation of your licence.

• You need the same translation for an insurance file or another administrative purpose.

When an official French translation is requested, a certified translation is a clear and reliable answer.

How the certified translation works

For administrative procedures in France, an official translation must come from a sworn translator registered with a French court. A machine translation or an informal translation does not have the same official status.

The certified translation reproduces every entry of your licence faithfully, in appropriate French terminology. It carries my stamp, my handwritten signature and a certification of conformity to the original.

That is how an authority, insurer or other organisation recognises it as an official sworn translation.

What do French rental agencies check at the counter?

Rental conditions go beyond the driving licence itself. Counter staff typically check several documents before they hand over the car:

• A valid US licence, often held for at least one year.
• A passport or national ID matching the reservation name.
• A credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit.
• An IDP or certified translation, when the agency asks for it.
• Additional drivers, each one listed and documented.

The minimum age is often 21. A young-driver surcharge may apply to drivers under 25.

• Licence number and issuing US state.
• Date of issue and expiry date.
